Hiccups

Most of us have experienced hiccups, an uncomfortable, sometimes embarrassing, but usually short-lived experience. But sometimes hiccups persist for a long period of time and can be a sign of serious underlying disease.

What are hiccups?

Hiccups are bursts of inspiratory (breathing in) activity. The muscles we use when we take in a breath are the intercostal muscles situated between the ribs, and the diaphragm – a sheet of muscle below the lungs.

Most simple cases of hiccups come after eating or drinking too much or too quickly. The stomach, which is situated right below the diaphragm, becomes distended and irritates it. This will cause the diaphragm to contract, as it does when we breathe in.

Why do hiccups occur?

Sometimes hiccups will occur because of a disturbance to the nerve pathways from the brain to the muscles involved. This explains why hiccups may occur with temperature changes or emotional situations. It is also the reason that a sudden shock can sometimes abolish an attack.

Persistent hiccups may signify problems in the brain, spinal cord or any of the structures around the diaphragm or chest wall.

Everyone has their own pet remedy for curing hiccups. Simply holding your breath is often effective. Breathing into a paper bag, the best remedy, increases the amount of carbon dioxide in the lungs, relaxing the diaphragm and halting the spasms.

Wonder where these funny noises arecoming from? The part to blame is your diaphragm (say: DIE-uh-fram). This is a dome-shaped muscle at the bottom of your chest,and all hiccups start here.
The diaphragm almost always works perfectly. When you inhale, itpulls down to help pull air into the lungs. When you exhale, thediaphragm relaxes and air flows out of the lungs back out throughthe nose and mouth.
But sometimes the diaphragm becomes irritated. When thishappens, it pulls down in a jerky way, which makes you suck air intoyour throat suddenly. When the air rushing in hits your voice box,your vocal cords close suddenly and you’re left with a big hiccup.
Some things that irritate the diaphragm are eating too quickly or toomuch, an irritation in the stomach or the throat, or feeling nervousor excited. Almost all cases of the hiccups last only a few minutes.Some cases of the hiccups can last for days or even months, but thisis very unusual and it’s usually a sign of another medical problem.
You’ve probably heard lots of suggestions for how to get rid ofhiccups, and maybe you’ve even tried a few. Holding your breathand counting to 10 is one way some people can get rid of theirhiccups. Other people say that drinking from the “wrong” side of aglass of water is the way to become hiccup-free.
Putting sugar under your tongue might work, too. And maybe themost famous treatment – having someone jump out and scare youwhen you’re not expecting it – helps some people wave goodbye totheir hiccups. Boo!

Freedom 251 a hoax?

freedom-251-review-ringing-bells-pc-tablet-media-640x316

An Indian company has launched what is being billed as the world’s cheapest smartphone.

Ringing Bells earlier said their Freedom 251 phone would be priced under 500 rupees (£5; $7.3), but at the launch on Wednesday, it said it would cost just 251 rupees ($3.67; £2.56).

1. The highlight of the phone is its jaw-dropping price tag. The company, which had intially teased the phone saying that it would be priced under Rs 500, revealed that the Freedom 251 smartphone will carry a price tag of Rs 251. Only.

2. Talking about the specs, the Freedom 251 handset will have a 4-inch WVGA IPS display, 3.2 megapixel auto-focus rear camera, 0.3 megapixel front camera, 1.3 GHz quad-core processor, 1GB RAM, 8GB of internal storage with SD card support, 1450 mAh battery, and Android 5.1 Lollipop OS.

3. The phone will come with a standard warranty of 1 year. According to the company’s website, “This warranty of the product extends for a period of 12 months for the host unit, 6 months for battery and charger, and 3 months for earphone commencing from the date of purchase.”

4. Bookings for the phone open on February 18 at 6AM and close on February 21 at 8PM.

5. Defence Minister Manohar Parrikkar will launch the smartphone ‘Freedom 251’ on February 17. The launch is in line with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for “empowering India to the last person, transforming India’s growth story”, the Noida-based company said.

After the booking started the site was down

Today a new brand has been all over the web, primarily for the most interesting story which is the budget smartphone launch in India. This is also speculated to be under the “Make in India” program to ensure different manufacturers adopt to this regime and bring more jobs in India. All this is good but there are a few things that are still not clear and which is the reason I would recommend you to better wait for a few days before ordering the devices.

While going through a few websites that had mentioned about the Ringing Bells Smart 101, I found that there are hundreds of consumers who have ordered the phones, while none of them have actually received the devices. Forget the devices, even no one have received an order confirmation which is confusing.

That said, the brand has been all over the Internet today for their upcoming model ie the Freedom 251 Smartphone, that would be priced below Rs 500. The question is not about the specifications or the features, but about the guarantee of getting the device. What if you get scammed with this new brand?

I would recommend everyone to just wait for a few days and see if someone actually gets the device in their hands and then take action or spend their hard earned money on this new brand that has a website Url name as “BELL” while the name on the site mentions “Ringing Bells”. No listing of their products on any well known e-commerce sites nor the PR is someone whom we recall, they are new in the industry.

Some might even say that it is a hoax, as it’s not possible to sell a handset at mere Rs 251. It might have been made possible by tieing up with the government since the handset would be launched in the presence of Honorable Member of Parliament, Dr Mulri Manohar Joshi and Honorable Union Minister of Defence, Shri Manohar Parrikar. But we would still advise you to beware of the fact that this company has been earlier in question about not delivering the Smart 101 handset that was launched at Rs 3000.

Above you can see some complaints posted by users about not receiving the handset even after payment. It would be better to opt for “Cash on Delivery” service and pay after getting the device in your hands. Just don’t jump on the bandwagon yet that’s what we would recommend for now since there’s no way to know whether the same company that couldn’t deliver its promise earlier would provide it now for such dirt cheap price. This just rings a few caution bells and alerts me to stay away. This is my advice to everyone who is jumping to throw their cash on the hot phone of the recent times.

Update: We have received an invite from the Company for the launch event that’s happening tomorrow in India in New Delhi. Read more here Ringing Bell to Launch Freedom 251 Smartphone at just Rs 500 / $7 in India

As we learn any code languages by this “Hello world” even I start this post with that.

The History of ‘Hello, World’

brian2

It’s the most famous program. Known as the first example in nearly every programming language for every programmer, where did this message come from?

As a function, the computer program simply tells the computer to display the words “Hello, World!” Traditionally, it’s the first program developers use to test systems. For programmers, seeing the two words on the screen means their code can compile, load, run and they can see the output.

It’s a test, signifying a start to a program. Over the past several decades, it’s grown to become a time-honored tradition.  All programmers that have come before you have, at some point, felt the same rush of adrenaline after realizing they successfully communicated through the computer. Here’s how the two most famous words in the history of programming first began:

Where does ‘Hello World’ come from?

“Hello, World” was created by Brian Kernighan (pictured above), author of one of the most widely read programming books: C Programming Language, in 1978. He first referenced ‘Hello World’ in the C Programming Language book’s predecessor: A Tutorial Introduction to the Programming Language B published in 1973.

main( ) {
extrn a, b, c;
putchar(a); putchar(b); putchar(c); putchar(’!*n’);
} 1 ’hell’;
b ’o, w’;
c ’orld’;

Unfortunately, the legend himself can’t definitely pinpoint when or why he chose the words “Hello, World.” When asked what sparked the idea for the name “Hello, World” in interview with Forbes India, he said his memory’s dim. “What I do remember is that I had seen a cartoon that showed an egg and a chick and the chick was saying, “Hello, World.”

It’s pretty fitting, considering “Hello, World” represents the birth of computer programming as a widespread phenomenon for the masses.

At the time, neither Kernighan nor his colleague Dennis Ritchie, the late author of the C language, could imagine just how monumental the language and the tutorial book would have on the field of programming today. These ideas were nothing but a research project inside Bell Labs, the research and development branch of AT&T.

Although no one can scientifically explain why “Hello, World,” grew to become wildly popular, “Hello, World” program marks a major change in the historical rhetoric of programming. Let’s look at its historical context.

Still in its Shell

It’s hard to imagine today, but before “Hello World” was published in Kernighan’s book, computers carried a negative connotation among the public before the 1970s. They were massive mainframes, incredibly slow, filled an entire room and needed a full staff of scientists or researchers for maintenance. In fact, before the late 70s, computer scientists programmed using stacks of punch cards!

People generally saw computers as untouchable, complex and ridiculously expensive devices reserved only for the elite in academia, defense or the government.  In fact, the industry titans who devoted their lives to the world of computing worked hard to overcome this stigma. It’s amazing to think how we’ve come so far as to some actually feel anxiety in being without our personal devices.

One of the first famous uses of computers in the US was back in 1890 when the Automatic Electrical Tabulating Machine calculated data for over 60 million Americans. In the 1940s, the Bombes and Colossuscomputers decrypted German codes during World War II.

The 1950s welcomed the first commercial computers, like the Zuse 3 and UNIVAC, for arithmetic operations, but you would need millions of dollars to actually buy one.

From an educational standpoint, most all of the programming language books about the earlier programming languages, like FORTRAN or BASIC, started off by proving a point: Computers are, in fact, useful. This is according to  Algorithmist and Researcher John Mount. Mount says the explosive popularity of “Hello, World” signifies an era when computer scientists no longer felt they needed to convince society that the utility of computers is tangible.

For instance, in the 1964 book My Computer Likes Me When I Speak Basic, the introduction talks about the purpose of programming languages in general. Plus, the first example outputs: “MY HUMAN UNDERSTANDS ME.” Using this example aims to reinforce the unpopular idea that humans can, in fact, talk to computers. The 1956 Dynamic Programming kicks off with examples that can be applied to ordinary calculus.

It wasn’t until The C Programming Language when “Hello World” really took off.

‘Hello World:’ Programming Has Arrived

One major catalyst that sparked the spread of ‘Hello World’ was the parallel introduction of the PDP-11, one of the first commercial success of microcomputers. Digital Equipment Corporation (DEC) sold over 600,000 units of the PDP-11 total at about $10,000 each, which was drastically lower than the millions of dollars computers typically cost. Plus, the PDP-11 16-bit series didn’t require punch cards. It was the first time you could use a programming language to directly talk to a computer.

But in order to boost public acceptance, DEC didn’t refer to it as a computer. It marketed it as “Programmed Data Processor” to disassociate the product from the mainframe computers of the past. As more people were purchasing a programmable computer, the demand for his book C Programming Language rose skyrocketed.

C and the operating system Unix first became popular on the PDP-11. So, it would follow then that the boom in commercial computers that supports the new C programming language, propelled thousands of people to read 200-page The C Programming Language. This re-introduced ‘Hello World.’

Almost every programmer who worked on desktop software in the 80s and 90s thereafter owned a copy or referenced the book. Million of copies have sold to date.

There were probably many different basic programs to start with, but ‘Hello World’ is, by far, the most famous today. Every programmer remembers their first ‘Hello World’ as a rite of passage. Many might not realize it, but each time a programmer feels the sweet feeling of triumph in clearing the first hurdle of programming with the words ‘Hello World,’ is experiencing a moment that transcends history.

Let’s check when the word “hello” started

The word “Hello” actually came from hola which meant to stop and pay attention. Alexander Bell preferred to use Ähoy”as in the ships those days which co-incidentally was misheard by Edison.

Alexander Graham Bell’s girlfriend’s last name was Hello. Every time he answered a ring, he said Hello in hope of listening to her voice. People picked it up. It mushroomed and spread quickly.It can be a myth.

Hello, with that spelling, was used in publications as early as 1833. These include an 1833 American book called The Sketches and Eccentricities of Col. David Crockett, of West Tennessee,[1] which was reprinted that same year in The London Literary Gazette.[2]

The word was extensively used in literature by the 1860s

he use of hello as a telephone greeting has been credited to Thomas Edison; according to one source, he expressed his surprise with a misheard Hullo.[8] Alexander Graham Bell initially used Ahoy (as used on ships) as a telephone greeting.[9][10] However, in 1877, Edison wrote to T.B.A. David, the president of the Central District and Printing Telegraph Company of Pittsburgh:Friend David, I do not think we shall need a call bell as Hello! can be heard 10 to 20 feet away.

What you think? Edison – P.S. first cost of sender & receiver to manufacture is only $7.00.[11]

By 1889, central telephone exchange operators were known as ‘hello-girls’ due to the association between the greeting and the telephone.
